The currently advertised promotion is only for MasterCards.
I suggest you do not waste money on testing VISA and AmEx.

My local supermarket runs these promotions regularly, and each type of cards is always under a different offer.

MC gift card, $5 coupon off next purchase good until Sep 10, 2011

Since I did not get a coupon back I could not tell you, but someone may in theory be able to use the coupon back toward another gift card purchase?
I have never shopped at Cubs, but in most of my stores these coupons (also called "catalinas" or "catalina coupons" because the company running the processing/printing/issuing is called "Catalina Marketing") are only valid on groceries and definitely not on the cards.

Recycling so that the $50 cards net you an additional 5cents each time, or the $100 amounts cost you 95cents at time of purchase.
I would stick to $50 cards and make 5c, rather than pay 95c fees for $100 ones.
