Maybe they were empties going for recycling. Over here there is a deposit on bottles and cans, 10 cents under a litre and 25 cents for container a litre and bigger. It's been very effective at diverting beverage containers from landfills and reusing them.
I dont shop at Tesco. But I have heard that some in England give clubcard points when you recycle glass etc. As people know clubcard points = BA miles. I dont know if they still do this though.
