The OP wrote:

So he was in 2D with 2C occupied -> Economy seating 2+2 instead of 1+1.
This would be the reason for asking for a compensation.
2C and 2D are on opposite sides of the aisle: there was one passenger in 2A/2C (left side of the aisle) and the OP in 2D/2F (right side).
