Stewie, that's true - SWP to Europe will cost you Asia or Africa, even if you take the BA/QF one-plane service through BKK. Life's not fair, and OWE rules often don't make any particular sense to those of us looking in.
If you like the idea of being more-or-less alone amongst herds of African animals and have 5 days or a bit more, I'd suggest that you spend it in Kruger and/or the adjoining private facilities. Kruger used to be obscenely cheap, and remains quite reasonable, for a relaxed do-it-yourself game-viewing experience that's impossible to beat. (Guided viewing might give a denser experience, if that's your preference.) SA doesn't seem to be following Namibia's downhill path (in terms of game parks) too rapidly, but there's some chance the place won't be worth the stop some time in the future, as seems to be the case with Etosha.
