If you are getting as far as CHC, take the time to visit ZQN and Milford Sound (although the weather may not be the greatest in August/September). It is worth the time you will spend there. Local tickets in NZ CHC-ZQN return are cheap. You'll fly over the southern Alps so get a window seat.
