I also think it's something to do with not having two flights up with the same callsign at the sane time ?? ie BA101 is delayed 24 hours but still operates, the rescheduled flight might be BA101A to allow the original to continue with the normal callsign.

Also there is a lot of P flights BAxxxxP for positioning flights, T for training etc etc
