Used to be one of the tricks I would have recommended for short haul to Ottawa or Montreal was to use YTZ instead of YYZ (save 1+ hours outgoing) but they've now sufficiently screwed up the schedules that this no longer works for most people.

PWA runs their airporter bus service to downtown hotels (hint, the Royal York Hotel is adjacent to the Union Subway Station) http://www.torontoairportexpress.com/
