It's called vertical integration and is quite common in industries who need to take more control of their own destiny. But I think you took my point too literally.
Well maybe on both counts.

But I wouldnt like to be the person who tells Richard Branson about BA / AA owning the airport. Competition is good as long as the airlines dont talk to each other. But with this comes a little risk on the handful of days when something goes wrong. This weekend went wrong, by the end of September the pax stranded will have forgotten about it. The families of the people who died will take longer.
