Is there a rule on Self-Downgrading?

Last Friday, I had the misfortune to be on a BHX-MUC on a CR9. It had been scheduled originally for a 195, but was changed some time ago. I was in 2D which was the second row on the 195, but is a bulkhead on the CR9. Business Class consisted of row 1 and row 2.

The CR9 bulkhead is not a happy place for me, I'm a big lad and whilst I fit in there, it's quite tight. I also can't get the tray table safely over me. 2A/C was occupied.

After "Boarding Completed", I asked if I could move to 3D which was free. This was denied because it was economy class, I said that I would be much more comfortable there and the crew went and had a conflab and then started to evict the passenger from 3A to move the curtain back a row. I stopped them from doing this, apologised to the pax in 3A about this and then spent the rest of the flight in discomfort and ended up with a bottle of water and a Twix at MUC for breakfast (no time for the lounge).

Should this happen again, does anyone know the actual rules on self-downgrading?
