Upon returning to Canada, the immigration official didn't take my I-94W away (I suppose I should've proactively given it to them) but thankfully the BA F check-in at YVR were able to take it off me!
Although it says on the back of the I-94 that you're supposed to surrender it to Canadian immigration going to Canada, in practice they will rarely pro-actively take it as you can actually use the same I-94 to re-enter the US if you are leaving to only go to Canada.
