Not quite sure what the extra security issues and formalities would be. As off hand, when i have used airport check-in, i can't think of anything different that took place at check-in when compared to my departure from LHR, but as ive said from personal experiance ive not had any questions asked or problems when i went through security without visiting the check-in desk first, albeit ive only ever skipped desk check-in twice.
