It has always been the airline that has taken it in the past (but, then again, I've always had to go to the bag drop). I think once I had to hand it over at the gate, but that may have been on UA.

As for the lounge, I would love to be there are 15.30 on the dot. However, given that I am (a) a blue and (b) never been lucky enough to fly at the front end of a plane on a long-haul flight, I'm afraid that I would have to just wistfully look at the doors and wonder about the delights within. Perhaps if I were to scratch at the doors, like a puppy kicked out of the house, they would take pity on me and let me in...
