Actually I had a similar experience on my recent HKG-SIN flight. Crew was not very motivated and friendly. They didn't welcome with a smile... The food was medium as well. I was never addressed by name.
A day later I flow between SIN and TPE and had 180° different experience. I was warmly welcomed and a flight attendant showed me my seat, stowed carry-on luggage and another one directly came with newspapers and magazines etc. Everyone knew my name. The food was also tasty and service very efficient.

I think it moslty depends on crew. After my first flight I thought LX &Co. or much friendlier - after my second flight I had my overall best C experience on a SQ flight. I'm looking forward to my next trip with SQ on Thursday and hope to get a friendly crew again.
