Since I don't know what day you're flying I can't confirm the details of your story, but in general NH retains some seats for their elites until check-in begins 24 hours before the flight. (If you are not an NH elite, they cannot assign you those seats online or via phone.) At check-in you should be able to select seats, and unless the flight is quite full you will likely be able to obtain a pair of seats. There is no guarantee, however.
