IME the way it works:
- before the gate. If the is NF/NC space available, then the elite + companion (who must be on the same reservation) are upgraded in advance.
- at the gate, the non-elite companion loses all status; you can throw out what the gate monitor says; the GA will not upgrade the non elite companion of a higher elite before a solo lower elite.
So breaking up OP's party into three reservations, on per elite, with the third on a supported upgrade, is the best way to upgrade all 5.
