Most of the trip was perfectly safe, Ghana, Benin, Togo and Burkina Faso definitely had no problems. Timbuktu can be kinda iffy these days, a friend who did a similar itinerary this year didn't make it up there. Also Cote d'Ivoire had a lot of 'customs' checks with soldiers with guns but they didn't bother us, so it was more annoying/time consuming than threatening.

Then again my last few trips have been to Syria and Afghanistan.. and I felt OK in those places too.
