Correct that they will only allow you to upgrade a single companion on the same PNR. I believe you can actually have more people on the PNR, but you have to call to request the upgrade in that case (as they won't know who you want to upgrade). I also think that in that case, you can only be upgraded once the flight goes to the DM list, so it's better to have no more than two people on the PNR.
