Thanks {b]GB, that's very helpful.
One last question - I understand that I have to have my entire routing decided before I book the ticket, but do I have to decide on carrier as well ?
Second to last leg is likely to be HKG-LHR, and would like to keep the BA/CX decision open until I've had experience of both of them earlier in the trip.

You don't have to decide your entire routing. Prior to departure you can make unlimited changes. In theory these are FOC but if you go to a BA or QF Travel Shop or Ticket Desk they levy a £30 reissuing charge. This charge applies to all reissues and not just OWE. The staff at the BA Shop in Edinburgh were a bit pissed with me as I had changed the routing twice (in addition to once at QF in London). It takes them a long time to reissue.
You can leave segments OPEN until you decide on dates or a carrier.
PS Are you and your good lady coming to the EDI do?
