I was flying LIT-ORD-PHL last night and around 5 pm in LIT they announced that all flights into NYC were cancelled (making me nervous that PHL could be next). When I got to ORD, it was definitely true that all UA flights into LGA were cancelled. I thought I saw EWR flights still going, but then these were cancelled, too. Did anything fly into the NYC airports last night?
With the NYC flights cancelled and the storm approaching, I was kind of expecting "Fall of Saigon" conditions at my PHL-bound gate, but there weren't THAT many people standing by. Things were quite orderly and relatively calm.
I heard something about Mayor Bloomberg ordering the NYC airports closed to arrivals, but it would have made no sense to do that on Friday evening. I'm in the Philly area now (11 am) and there are still only light winds and no rain.
It's frustrating because any logical traveller would have thought Friday evening would be "safe" to fly to the Northeast. I was originally scheduled to fly in Sat. evening and I thought that would likely be cancelled. But I fully expected all the Friday night in-bound flights to operate, with all the planes being flown out by Saturday afternoon. It's ridiculous when elected-officials panic beyond anything that is reasonably prudent.
