I have done it many times including in places like Japan that are usually more strict. The easiest way is to add the second name to the reservation as an additional guest. You can also state the reservation is for that person and not you in the comments or send in email to hotel, if you are nervous. I have also booked for others by phone and none of my relatives or friends had any problems checking in.
