On page 6 of the OWE rules it states that one cannot upgrade from economy to business/first by sector.

I just travelled 3 continents on an economy OWE and upgraded 7 of my 8 AA sectors with a VIPOW and electronic upgrades.

What gives?

Normally, when a fare rules says non-upgradable, it means you cannot pay to upgrade or to change to a different fare basis in order to circumvent some restrictions. SOme fares let you do this, others do not.

Upgrading using FFP points/credits/stickers/whatever is a different matter entirely.
