Mind you, the claim might make miracles. The CC will go to AC and ask them to pay whatever they have to pay based upon tariffs etc.

The claims process is a bit convoluted, so OP should start it as early as possible. I think he has to wait until 7 days after the flight to file, but since the insurance company has to fax/email forms, they have to completed and documented, etc, it is never to early to start.
We still haven't heard back from OP with what sort of insurance he has or if available..
I agree.. sitting in limbo isn't helping to speed up the situation.. make that first phone call to cc or insurance company.. or get the claims going..
If I was in his shoes and getting the runaround like that.. I would have been dealing directly with the manager onsite.. following up consistently..
