Here is my (final) planned itinerary for N.America.

Arrive in ORD.
Go ORD-DFW-ORD (visit DFW for a few days)
Go ORD-PTY-ORD (Connect via MIA)
Leave the continent by Cathay Pacific
ORD-HKG (via SFO).

Is that six segments or less?

My stopover points are ORD (three times), PTY and DFW.
