Clever idea. But doesn't this use the other as the transcon segment for the 2nd leg of the same flight?
At the moment my plan is to do:
HKG-(YVR)-JFK or SYD-(LAX)-JFK
JFK-DFW
DFW-MIA
MIA-JFK
JFK-YVR
YVR-DFW
DFW-LAX
LAX-LHR
