Actually, I've made inquiries to AMEX in the past. On their Charge products (as opposed to credit products), they will let you wire money in above the amount you'd like to spend. Then call just before the charge gets processed to ensure that you won't end up in their fraud department.

Exactly. I called Amex and got wiring instructions and then stopped by the bank and followed through with a wired deposit. The only thing I remember was that the "wire" didn't eliminate the account hold. It was about two days before I could make the "larger than normal" Amex purchase.
