A similar thing happened to me, about 6mnths ago, but it was my own fault for leaving my wallet at home. I had no issue with multiple SPG properties in Seattle, and went through a similar prove yourself with Hertz, but all in all it wasn't as difficult as one might think to travel without ID or CC.
