This is what happened to me yesterday. The EK website said that my credit card was declined, but it did not take me to the Verified by Visa page first.

I notice that for flights originating or terminating in the US, you can make a booking on the website without paying. They will hold the fare for 24 hours. Then you can call the call centre.
