Canceling the SPG membership for one property that did not stand up to standards? You can write to corporate and explain otherwise they may not "miss" you in reality.

OP-totally side and agree with you. The reason I stay (and spend multiple-tens-of-thousands-of-dollars a year) at a hotel 200+ nights a year includes the ability to have a VERY RELAXING/fun/eventful/interesting vacation that is paid for with points! The OP did not get that.
So-what should a program be able to get away with before members realize they are getting
taken?
1-No bed type guarantee on awards?
2-Press release on lounges open 7 days a week only to not enforce?
3-jackhammers during vacation
without advance notice?
4-Issue resolution to include 20% return for unused room?
I think the OP has a valid reason here. It may only be "a few nights" lost, but how many people put together does it take to hit the bottom line? And remember, FT is not scientifically representative of the traveling public as a whole.
OP-I would also post a response on Tripadvisor as well.
