First thing i would do is ask if they wanted one of the other seats instead, so they could choose. And if they'd rather sit in the middle i'm fine with that too, flight is not that long. It was just a random thought on how to maximize the chance of getting a row of three alone if the flight is not full.
Btw (hope i'm not stepping on any more toes here) is there actually people that
prefer the middle seats when flying alone?

It's a subject that infuriates many airline staff as they have to deal with the fallout which results from such behaviour.
