Another data point regarding upgrades: This summer my wife and I had award tickets in F from CDG to SFO. Original leg through IAD was cancelled. I happened to check in the early morning and saw the dreaded "flight cancelled" in red. After a moment in shock, I used Skype to call the 1K desk in the USA, and they very helpfully booked me through FRA - First Class all the way.
Moral of the story for me: get up early and check your flights!
