This is the policy for
SCHEDULE CHANGE, not irrop. I was also under the impression that irrop should be treated the same way and I tried to argue with the agent, but I did not find any indication in the
IRROP profile. The supervisor in Chicago calling center insisted I could only be protected in Y class.
The major difference is Schedule Change usually happens before the date of departure, so no matter what booking class the agent rebooks you into, IM could have time to adjust it (from F to NF, even from Y to your-original-booking-class).
You should be protected in the upgraded class.
