HI Winchester might not be beautiful (haven;t seen it myself) but it's new - and Winchester is.

Would be a great place to visit and being 3 miles from town center is a cheap cab ride. Winchester is a great city for walking and has some good pubs and restaurants and King Arthurs Round Table, the Cathedral - and Bucklers Hard, Beaulieu, New Forrest etc if a car hire is on the books or perhaps if the hotel can organise a tour. Salisbury is also close as is Stonehenge if you are desperate.
