(For the record, I'm from here and have been doing lots of this for years - things like the express-to-the-local trick, and the not taking a taxi to 51st go without saying...)

The real problem is that I'm coming straight from Union Sq instead of Chelsea where I usually leave from, which adds those critical transfer minutes.

I'm definitely intrigued by the 6/E option, but as others mention it's the 6 train...plus that two block transfer that worry me.

The L to Broadway Junction is also interesting because it's just two modes of transport, but worried about cars when I come out... does anyone know anything about that?

Either way, yes.. very aware that it's tight. I'll try to do a minute-by-minute, whatever I do and report back.
