Up Park is an absolutely horrible idea. The only thing that might be worse is up 6th Ave and it is probably a wash on the two. Up 3rd Ave will maybe be a touch better but you'll potentially hit tunnel and bridge traffic.

As for taking the 4/5 and switching to the 6, Decent chance of saving a minute or two, I suppose, though no guarantees you'll pass a 6 in that short hop that would get you ahead of the one you were waiting for in 14th Street. I guess the chance of that working is high enough to justify trying.
