SkyTeam Aligns Extra Baggage Allowance for Elite Members

Alliance-wide harmonization simplifies multi-carrier travel

AMSTERDAM, 22 August 2011 – Effective 1 September 2011, SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, will implement a consistent extra baggage policy for Elite and Elite Plus frequent flyers across all 14 member airlines.

The new policy, already introduced by a number of SkyTeam members earlier in the year, has been designed to simplify travel by ensuring the same extra baggage allowance for Elite travelers, regardless of Frequent Flyer Program (FFP), carrier and class of travel flown.

The changes particularly benefit travelers flying on multiple SkyTeam airlines. Previously, member airlines allowed extra baggage only for Elite and Elite Plus members of their respective FFP, which did not apply to mixed itineraries or other members' flights.

“A harmonized extra baggage policy is good news for our Elite and Elite Plus customers and frontline employees alike, thanks to one simple set of rules throughout the alliance,” said Murli Poonath, SkyTeam’s Director of Marketing and Customer Experience. “This is yet another example of SkyTeam members’ commitment to working together as we grow, to deliver tangible benefits and enhanced customer service to our premium passengers.”

SkyTeam’s new extra baggage policy for Elite members is as follows:

Weight concept – 10Kg extra for Elite members and 20Kg for Elite Plus members

Piece concept – One extra piece for Elite and Elite Plus members

In some cases, depending on the itinerary, restrictions might apply. Customers can contact their SkyTeam member airline for information about their specific itinerary.
