I'm not a cynical as you (close) but I think
AmericanAirlines clearly has taken a more proactive tone and approach than the abysmal failure that the PR Firm
http://www.webershandwick.com/ used when AA first attempted to engage in Social Media. I highly doubt AA did what they should have and brought social media in house, but I see progress in how they are choosing to engage with people across various channels.
