I have a vague recollection there was at one time a glass barrier (with panic ironmongery to the lounge side) separating the Galleries balcony from the adjoining walkway.

If it has been removed, I can only guess its removal would have been on the instruction of BAA's Fire Officer and/or local Fire Brigade
