I don't mind connecting through Canada or New Zealand but prefer not to connect through Singapore or any other out of the way locations.

That said, there are no easy upgrades out of Sydney. There are lots of customers paying premium fares for C/J and F seats.
To be able to use your US miles on UA, NZ or AC would require Y or B fares. That would be a *A upgrade award.
I suggest you check out the AC, NZ and UA forums for threads on upgrades.
