Well, this is a good strategy is you're a guy that wants to save cash now, but if you are a person that uses miles for cabin upgrades, you should still try to buy V class or above even when you're way ahead of the game.
Cabin upgrades are very difficult to come by as it's not often that it makes sense to buy a YBHK fare.
Generally it often makes sense to buy these SNQO fares on shorter routes like HKG-SIN where there is a huge price differential and the number of miles involved are small.
For long haul I agree and tend to prefer mileage earning fares.
