It's difficult to generalize like this. Each fare on a given route has its own set of rules regarding flexibility, advance purchase, etc. There may even be several different "M" fares with different rules. You have to read the specific rules of each fare.
The only thing that is common across fare classes, for the most part, is whether or not they earn miles.
