I've found the initial contact MBNA staff yo be pretty on the ball. If you just have an issue of principle with it then I'd let it go and do a new application. Mine went through in a day after filling in online and calling up (because I wasn't sure of something).
If you're likely to be rejected then you might do better asking if you can do the new application on the phone and explaining why you should get one. I think it was a retentions team who deal with the account closure. They may be able to pre authorise the new account.
Hey guys, thanks for the advice...
Just wanted to give an update. Phoned up , just after the renewal date to say I wanted to cancel the card (and I had actually emailed them, but didn't get a response)...saying that the cost was too expensive to justify and wanted to cancel. Since they didn't contact me and still debited the card I was offered 5000 miles in a gesture of goodwill

...which now brings me for enough for a return to South Africa!..so I think it was a bit of a win

...thanks for the advice!
