If it helps calm your nerves somewhat... I don't know what station-to-station connection you have in central London, but the timings generally given to get from one terminus to another seem to be based on the speed of an arthritic tortoise. You should have a little leeway if things go wrong.
For example, I've managed in the past (due to my own misreading of an engineering timetable) to end up in London Bridge, off a Gatwick train, and managing to catch a train from King's Cross due to depart 15 minutes later, thanks to the rather quiet City traffic on a Saturday evening. I wouldn't like to count on it, but you should have a little breathing space.
Thanks but it's my own connection - not national rail. Trains leave hourly from Victoria to my station at 22 minutes past and if I allow a little longer to get the next train from Gatwick I arrive at 21.26 meaning I'd have to sit around for ages! At only 28 minutes it's incredibly tight, but I think I'll risk it. Worst case scenario I lose a fiver by having to buy another ticket.
