Either way, losing(or mis-routing/delays) 1 or x of 2 is and will be an issue at some point in your travels.
I find a well packed medium size one(can be carried on OR checked as needed) works great for trips of up to 12 months.
Plus IF you end up having to lug that suit case a couple few blocks because of unforeseen issues size and weight add up fast.
