A universal adapter is one that works with all socket types - see
http://www.swisstravelproducts.de/poweradapter_e.htm for an example. These are much more useful than the old style adapters that were different for each region. Most UK electrical stores, including Currys, Comet, etc, will sell you one of these if you ask for a "universal adapter".
