That being said, if you think all you will do is work and/or sleep the whole way, or if you're really saving those miles for something special down the line, J might be perfectly adequate. But if enjoying your 12 or so hours each way is a factor, go for F.
One other thing you should know is that CX is starting to roll out its new J seat. Other folks in this forum will know far better than I do whether it might be on the LAX-HKG run next year. There's been an initial report of someone flying it on that route, at post 132 of this thread:

But even armed with that knowledge, the likelihood of it being old J and the difference that will remain between even new J and F is such that I'd recommend F.
In June, my LAX - HKG 777 had the new J seats. On the way back, I had the old J seats. The new Js are soo much better. I took a peek into F and it was night and day. F pax had PJs and continous service the whole flight.
