I suspect that will be the case, and it's been my experience with CX at both HKG and various outstations. The problem is, what if you get some crummy agent who doesn't know how to do their job properly? I had a similar situation in SYD, flying QF SYD-HKG, overnight (<24hr) layover, then HKG-NRT-LAX-SAN on a separate ticket. The J checkin agent said oh no, we could never check your bags through. They would stay in HKG overnight and that's a security risk! So I arrived in HKG, collected my bags, schlepped upstairs, and rechecked with CX. No mention of security risks AA has also refused to check bags through an overnight connection, even on the same ticket.

So it may just be that CX is better at this than everyone else. When it comes to overnight bag check, I normally am able to, I just have contingencies in place in case I am told no.
