Can you please provide more info about the Business Traveler article you refer to. We have no idea what you may be addressing unless you tell us more.

The rules you should be going by are the ones originally posted by each participating airline when they announced the promotion. These do vary from carrier to carrier, but they should be the ones to work by. I admit that in some cases these are contradictory, and if one reads the rules, eligible flights for this bonus can be different from mileage accrual eligibility. (At least by my reading of the small print, and the confusion also brought into the picture because there is another set of rules that apply to the Million Mile Sweepstakes.
