Wording on staralliance.com is that one needs either 1) *G card or 2) other valid indication of Star Alliance Gold level status.
So, officially *G card is not required if you have some other means like maybe a letter stating that you are *G from your airline.

In practice I've also encountered LH agents requesting my 1K card even though I was flying in non LH F.
