Maybe it's a function of where you live (and which airline you fly). I fly UA from SFO. I have taken advantage of many sales to Asia lately, but I haven't seen any good deals to South America (or Africa, for that matter) in several years.
I fly AA and DL and have never really seen great deals to SA/Africa. Unfortunately those are the two continents that really interest me for actual vacations. Europe is too expensive to visit frequently, and the Asian destinations usually on sale (NRT, HKG, SIN, etc) don't really interest me much. I like the rougher destinations with more outdoor activities.
