Shoot - tough lesson to learn. I didn't realize I was "risking" getting points by booking the rate since it was a Marriott promotion and not some special mark-down or "bid" opaque type rate.
The confusion for me was that the exact same rate is available via marriott.com (I checked too late - after I got the "pushback" about adding my MR account number). I was on orbitz already for another, unrelated transaction and didn't think anything of just booking the Marriott reservation since it wasn't labeled as an Orbitz special or some other flag.....oh well, now I know.
I will try again to get the MR number added, just for the incidentals + platinum amenities.

If there wasn't a flag saying it was a special rate and if it was the same price as Marriott.com, you will be able to earn points on this reservation. Just give your number to the check-in agent and you should see points.
Most bookings on Orbitz will earn you points at chains as they are retail rates. Even though you pay for the room upfront, they are still retail rates and earn points the same way as booking through Marriott.com
